Culture on New Technology

What kind of culture influences through technology can you see from today’s world?

All of the above images show how our life going on these days.Nowadays, almost everyone has a computer. And hearing that kid as young as 5-6 years old playing with the computer is not something new. You can really see how the computer have really changed our society. The most obvious group influenced by the computer should be kids and teenagers. In Asian countries, kids are spending more time on their computer rather than playing outside or doing something healthy such as exercising. They are attracted to playing games such as online games and can spend up to 4-6 hours non stop just playing.

Is there a possibility to reshape the (new) culture today via new technology, How?

There are chances of ways to reshape the culture we see today with new technologies that can be created in the future. How exactly? Well, big software companies may come up with ways that can limit the time for kids to spend on their computers, or can just limit of how long they can play games.

Media Imperialism

Media imperialism means that someone manipulating the media to influence people to do something that he wanted them to do. This is a terrifying power if they misused the power it will only cause chaotic situation. Media imperialism also apply in the government conspiracy. The politician used this kind of dirty trick to pull an action. For example in the documentary video “The Power of Nightmares (Part 3 - Shadow in the Cave)" George Bush blindly takes action on the people who that he assumed to be terrorist to be caught. It’s all about one thinking then he apply the media imperialism to make his assumption become true but it’s not actually. The news also had been manipulated by the government for example the tragedies of September 11 the media told the world that terrorist did the plane crash but after that there was many doubt about the explosion some says it was government conspiracy. This is how the media imperialism works and it's pretty much the same as mind control it’s has the power to control the world by using media.

McLuhan's 'Tetrad of Media'

McLuhan was the one who created the tetrad of media. As we can see, there are 4 human action that make up the tetrad made by McLuhan, which is enhances, reverses, retrieves, and obsolesces. There are many type of medium but I'll choose mobile phone as my subject. Mobile phone have been widely use these days, and it's convenient to bring them anywhere as it is small and mobile. This will enhances the speed of people get connect to each other by calling or just sending a short message(SMS). So, Primitive or old ways of communicating like using carrier pigeon, heliographs, smoke signals or telegraph will no longer be used. In the future, the probability of people will not see each other face to face will be higher due to the advance in the technology world.

Obscenity, Pornography and Indecency

Obscenity, indecency and pornography is a different kind of topic and I will explain about the differences between each of it. First of all, obscenity means is to describe anything that has to do with inappropriate words, media forms, and pictures which portray any offensive particularly in sexual issues which still can be accepted in moral standard. However, indecency is very much different to the obscenity. It menas something or someone looked unsuitable or no manners. There are lot of example of indecency, such as screaming and kicking anything in public without any reason, or wearing something that expose most of his/her body on the streets. Many teenager nowadays love to do those indecency stuff because they think it is kind of cool to do it. Last but not least, pornography is an explicit representation of sexual things in some of media form, for example, videos, pictures and magazines. Pornography normally a social taboo for the society but last few years has saw an emergence in its popularity, thanks to the contribution from the Internet.

Media literacy

Media literacy is the process of accessing, analyzing, evaluating and creating messages in a wide variety of media modes, genres and forms. It uses an inquiry-based instructional model that encourages people to ask questions about what they watch, see, and read. Media literacy education provides tools to help people critically analyze messages to detect propaganda, censorship, and bias in news and public affairs programming (and the reasons for such), and to understand how structural features -- such as media ownership, or its funding model[1] -- affect the information presented. Media literacy aims to enable people to be skillful creators and producers of media messages, both to facilitate an understanding as to the strengths and limitations of each medium, as well as to create independent media. Media literacy is an expanded conceptualization of literacy. By transforming the process of media consumption into an active and critical process, people gain greater awareness of the potential for misrepresentation and manipulation (especially through commercials and public relations techniques), and understand the role of mass media and participatory media in constructing views of reality.-wikipedia.com

i think media literacy is important to FCM students because the FCM students cant really cope with the way of studies. This is because most FCM students study using their imaginary not facts and rule. Some of the FCM they like to study using different type of media. The way of studies should be in many different way because some students cant cope with one way to study.

Media Stereotype

Stereotype is often used with a negative connotation when referring to an oversimplified, exaggerated, or demeaning assumption that a particular individual possesses the characteristics associated with the class due to his or her membership in it - wikipedia.

Stereotypes can appear in the media because of the biases of writers, directors, producers, reporters and editors and it can be either positive or negative.Stereotype usually relating to the class, ethnicity or race, gender, and sexual orientation.

One of stereotype example is black men are good at basketball and we can see this in many movies. When the camera captured a scene of people playing basketball, it always black men whose playing it. Why aren’t white men playing it? They not good at basketball, do they?

Rumors, lies and innuendo spread far, wide, and fast on the Internet.

Do you often take what is on the Internet as truth without thinking much about it? If yes, why? If no, why? Discuss this in your own words.

I usually didn’t take what on the internet as truth because, as shown on the comic strip given, anybody can write an article on internet. We can’t sure that the fact is true.

There’s always a risk when we try to find information on the internet. There’s lots of information we can get. Some of it is good information but some of it is just not true. It’s hard to find a reliable web site that we can trust. There’s always a doubt when getting information, especially when the author of the sites is not a professional. When I’m looking for facts, I find it in few different web sites and compare the information. By this way, I can find out which fact is true and which one is not.

Today, we can get information on blog, forum, etc. Most of it gives facts in what they believe. This is one of the reasons why information on internet can’t be trusted 100% because we can’t guarantee that what they believe is true. Some individual or group may try to spread false information for their own benefit. For example, if a person tries to sell a product on-line, they may use false information to attract people to buy it.

We have to be careful when we read something on the internet. Be aware on what we read and try to use our best judgement before believing on what we read.

Social Media

Social media can be defined in many ways. It is Internet- and mobile-oriented tools for information interchange, discussion, relationship, connecting, sharing information and many more.

Social media came in many configurations such as, social networking like Myspace and Facebook, blog, vblog. Internet forums, and etc.
The advantages of social media is that, it helps to bond relationship between one and another, we can easily communicate with people from another part of the world and learn about their culture at a very low cost. And it made life easier too. You wouldn’t have to write, seal a stamp and post your letter just to get in touch with your love ones. Instant Message (IM) like Yahoo Messenger (YM), Skype, MSN had made it easier.

Furthermore, with social media like blog and vblog you can share a lot of things; your thought, pictures, videos and so much more. You can show off your creativity, skills and participate in certain community you chose to be. You can do most of everything without anybody controlling you and telling you what to do and what not.
On the other hands, there are also some disadvantages regarding this matter. Some people might misuse these technology for their own benefit to degrading others and some might also addicted to it.
